Everyone blames "bloat" on creatine. Almost no one explains what's actually happening in the cell when they say it. Let's fix that.
The actual chemistry
Creatine is osmotically active inside the muscle cell. Raising intracellular creatine concentration raises intracellular osmolality, which draws water in with it — distinct from, and additive to, the water bound by glycogen (roughly 3g of water per gram of glycogen stored). The chain runs: more intracellular creatine → higher intracellular osmolality → osmotic water influx → cell swelling.
That's the real chemistry behind "creatine bloat." It is intracellular fluid shift — water moving into the muscle cell itself — not fat gain, not subcutaneous water retention, and not, for creatine specifically, sodium-driven.
Is the swelling doing anything?
A little, but it's not the main event. Cell swelling is a weak anabolic signal, contributing modestly to mTOR pathway activation. It's a minor, secondary contributor to hypertrophy relative to the mechanical tension and metabolic stress your training itself creates — not a primary driver on its own.
So what are you actually feeling?
Not fat. Not classic water retention either. What you're feeling is your muscle cells holding more of the fuel — creatine and the water that follows it — than they used to. Same underlying chemistry, described properly instead of used as a scare word.

"Bloat" is doing a lot of marketing work for something that's actually a well-understood, benign, and temporary intracellular fluid shift. Knowing the mechanism means you can stop worrying about a word and start understanding what your body is actually doing.
